1. Share what everyone is reading and why
  • Grayson- The Hobbit because I want to read the story that leads into the Lord of the Rings.
  • Kobe- The Hobbit, I just wanted to see how the Lord of the Rings started
  • Maya- The Horse Whisperer, Mrs. Nobles recommended it.
  • Ross- Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy- Because I heard that the movie was good and it is based off of the book
  • Alina- The Help, because I saw the movie and I thought the book would be good.

2. Review as a group what you already know about the genre
  • Novels are usually long
  • Usually have some meaning behind them
  • They either tell a story or they are informational
  • It has characters
  • It follows the plot structure

    • Rising action
    • Climax
    • Falling action
    • Resolution
  • Has chapters
  • They have prologues
3. Find out something new about the genre
  • A novel isn't exactly a book until it is put between two covers
  • It is usually written in a narrative style
4. How do authors write the beginning of the genre?
  • Ross: He tries to make it so it is mysterious, so you don't know whats going on,
  • Maya: Started off with a car crash, which was also an effective hook. he also made it so it switches from third to first person.

  • Alina: She uses third person and just jumps right into the story. She is also very effective with the character voice.
5. What Master Techniques have you seen so far and how?
  • Imagery- Describing the places, the setting and the character.
  • Cool Vivid Words- Describing the places, the setting and the character
  • Speaker- You have three different main characters and it goes from each person.
  • Character Voice- How the characters talk. For example in The Help everyone talks with a southern accent.
